As our brain learns a new language? Posted on May 18th , 2016

Learning a new language stimulates increased gray matter , or cortex, the thin layer that covers the brain. It is there that are the cell bodies of neurons that process information . Learning is similar to the gains that you have to exercise : the more training , better conditioning , more " muscle " . Thousands of synapses and new connections are formed to fix the words , sounds and meanings of the new language.

In the higher mammals - primates and cetaceans - the brain has an uneven surface , full of bulging areas - the turns - interspersed with small valleys - the grooves . Since the least developed mammals such as mice , has few turns and grooves , the surface is smoother .

The more we practice and strive in the new language , the more connections are formed by storing this information. Better becomes the new language domain.

When you learn a second language in childhood the mother tongue and the new language mix in the same area as the functions of brain regions not yet defined . In adults , these areas are already determined , and the brain uses different places to store information.
